Rachel Bagshaw is an award-winning director and theatre maker.

Rachel’s show The Shape of the Pain, developed with Chris Thorpe, opened at Edinburgh in 2017 where it won a Fringe First. It has since had runs at Battersea Arts Centre and Wilton’s Music Hall, and toured nationally.

Rachel is Associate Director at the Unicorn Theatre where work includes The Bee in Me and Aesop’s Fables. Other work includes Augmented (UK tour), Midnight Movie (Royal Court Theatre), Icons (WOW Festival/ Hull 2018), Hamlet, (Young Vic), Resonance at the Still Point of Change (Unlimited Festival, South Bank Centre), The Rhinestone Rollers, Just Me, Bell (Graeae). She was Resident Assistant Director at the Young Vic 2010-11.

Rachel is an Associate Artist at Wilton’s and has directed extensively for drama schools and participatory projects, including a longstanding relationship with RADA. Future projects include A Dead Body in Taos by David Farr (Fuel).

China Plate are working with Casey Bailey to tour Please Do Not Touch in 2026.

Casey is a writer, performer and educator, born and raised in Nechells, Birmingham, UK. Casey was the Birmingham Poet Laureate 2020 – 2022 and the Greater Birmingham Future Face of Arts and Culture 2020. Casey’s second full poetry collection Please Do Not Touch was published by Burning Eye in 2021.

He was commissioned by the BBC to write The Ballad of The Peaky Blinders in 2019. In 2020 the poem was internationally recognised, winning a Webby Award. Casey’s sellout debut rap based play GrimeBoy was commissioned by the Birmingham Rep in 2020. He was part of the 2019/2020 Bush Theatre EWG and has been selected as part of this years Vault Festival’s Vault 5.

Casey has performed his poetry nationally, and internationally. Casey’s writing and work in his community and education saw him was named as one of Birmingham Live’s, Birmingham “30 under 30” of 2018, he was also recognised in 2021 when he was made a Doctor of the University of Worcester. He was also named as one of 25 Black Champions of Theatre by The Alfred Fagon Award.

Garry Stewart (Director of Recognise Black Heritage & Culture), Marcia Dunkley (researcher and teacher) and Dawn Carr (Heritage Officer, Legacy WM) at Black Heritage Walks Network worked with China Plate and Overhear to create a a new cultural walk in Handsworth exploring migrant communities who settled in the Handsworth area. The audio trail version of these local stories were told by local residents and can be found on the Overhear app.

The Black Heritage Walks Network was set up in 2018 to highlight the achievements of the African Caribbean community in the UK. The initial aim was to capture the stories and history of the Windrush generation in Handsworth to mark the 70th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush carrying passengers from the Caribbean. The organisation has expanded to develop numerous walks, exhibitions, film festivals and educational workshops.

Black Heritage Walks are very prominent in USA, however despite the UK having a large black population and rich heritage, there is a lack of black heritage walks on offer. After visiting the Liverpool Slavery Museum, Marcia realised Birmingham did not recognise or celebrate any of its black heritage or history, despite being the second city in the UK and having the largest Black population, outside of London.

As a result, in 2017, Marcia contacted Dawn and Garry to identify prominent black people, buildings and events that have shaped the heritage of Birmingham. They decided to gather research, by speaking to local people, visiting archives and heritage sites, to create history walks from a British Afro Caribbean perspective.

The walks are a great opportunity to enjoy some exercise and fresh air, while also developing an understanding of local place, and community.

Contender Charlie uses the power of storytelling and mythology to enhance and inspire the creative learning of young people as well as their teachers and school leaders.

Their mission is to support young people in the exploration of their emotional development and creative potential. As well as to support those who mentor, teach or lead students in the promotion of inspiring, effective and ethical practice.

In 2013 Contender Charlie partnered with China Plate and Warwick Arts Centre to produce the incredibly successful Macbeth – Blood Will Have Blood for 9-13 year olds which toured five times. In 2019 they partnered again to tour a second Shakespeare adaptation for a similar age range, Romeo and Juliet – Mad Blood Stirring. This was commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre, Z-arts, Oxford Playhouse and The Core at Corby Cube. Supported by The Albany.

China Plate collaborated with David to develop, realise and subsequently tour Trying It On.

Playwright and contemporary political commentator. David Edgar has been writing critically acclaimed plays since 1971. David’s recent work includes Playing with Fire (National Theatre, 2005), Testing the Echo (Out of Joint, 2008), and If Only (Chichester Festival Theatre, 2013). Plays for the RSC include Destiny (1976), an adaptation of Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby (1980), Maydays (1983), Pentecost (1994) and Written on the Heart (RSC, 2011).

David is the RSC’s most premiered playwright and his 2017 RSC adaptation of A Christmas Carol was revived in 2018, following a new production of his political defection play, Maydays, at the Other Place. He has won many awards, including the John Whiting award, the Society of West End Theatres best play, the Tony best play and the Evening Standard best play.

He founded Britain’s first graduate playwriting course, at the University of Birmingham and now teaches playwriting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. His book about playwriting, How Plays Work, was published in 2009.

Christopher is currently working with China Plate to develop To The Streets!

He has recently been appointed Artistic Director of the Rose Theatre in Kingston, London. Prior to that he was Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre from 2012-2017 and an Associate Director at the Bush Theatre from 2008 – 2011. He was a 2017 fellow of the Clore Leadership Programme. His many directing credits at the Gate include the world premiere of George Brant’s Grounded (which also ran at the Traverse Theatre, Studio Theatre Washington DC), as well as touring nationally and internationally and which won a Fringe First and Best Production at the Off West End Awards.

Recent directing credits include: Trying It On (China Plate/RSC/Royal Court), On The Exhale (China Plate/Traverse Theatre, released as an audiobook by Audible, winner: Fringe First), The Caretaker (Bristol Old Vic/Northampton Royal and Derngate), Twelve Angry Men (Birmingham Rep/West End), Sixty-Six Books, In The Beginning (Bush Theatre/Westminster Abbey); Grace, Pressure Drop (On Theatre).

China Plate are currently exploring / working on a new show with Caroline; having recently worked together to tour All of Me (the possibility of future splendour) across the UK. All of Me opened at Summerhall (Edinburgh 2019) winning the Mental Health Fringe Award and a Stage Award before transferring to The Yard, London.

Caroline is a theatre maker, performer, writer and director. Her work tours internationally. She was nominated for a 2013 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre for You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, which won The Stage Award’s Best Solo Performer in 2010. Other work for stage includes Mess (Traverse Theatre, The Stage Award’s Best Ensemble 2012), Islands (Bush Theatre and British Council Showcase), Tranklements (New Vic), Penelope RETOLD (Derby Theatre) and Muckers (the egg, Bath and Conde Duque, Madrid). Her audio work for the BBC includes: Paris, Nana & Me, Pandora and on award-winning series Home Front and Tracks.

Caroline regularly collaborates with other companies as a deviser, performer, writer dramaturg and director. She also mentors artists and companies and leads workshops. In 2016 she became the first BBC Birmingham Writer in Residence, and received a Collaborative Research Award from The Culture Capital Exchange. She was 2018/19 Creative Fellow at Birmingham University’s Shakespeare Institute, teaching undergrad and MA students and developing work at The Other Place (RSC).

Maral is working with China Plate on Neighbourhood Creatives.

Maral is a British-Iranian jewellery maker and visual artist based in the West Midlands, whose practice challenges traditional ideas of jewellery as purely decorative or commercial, instead using it as a tool for personal and political storytelling. Her work explores themes of identity, feminism, displacement, and the Deaf experience.

As a Deaf artist, Maral draws on her lived experiences as a woman, refugee, and member of the Deaf community. She uses unconventional materials such as human hair and bone china to create pieces that speak out against oppression—such as brooches protesting the forced hijab in Iran, and earpieces challenging medicalised views of deafness and the expectation of lip reading. These pieces often incorporate performance and sound, transforming jewellery into interactive, immersive narratives.

Maral’s work has been supported by Arts Council England and other commissions. She is also the founder of SignLoom Studios – a platform dedicated to creating inclusive immersive experiences and empowering the Deaf community in digital and XR spaces.

China Plate are working with Urielle Klein-Mekongo to develop TRASH.

Urielle is a writer, theatre maker, singer/songwriter and performer. After first entering training via the National Youth Theatre’s Playing Up course in 2013, she went on to study Acting and Contemporary Theatre at East 15 where she graduated in 2017.

Urielle premiered Yvette, her first professional outing as a writer-performer, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017, and went on to tour the show nationally in 2018 and 2019.  Urielle was nominated for ‘Best Actress in a Play’ at The Stage Debut Awards 2019 for her performance in Yvette, and the show won the Young Harts Writing Fest Audience Favourite 2017, Kings Head Theatre Stella Wilkie Award 2017 and The East 15 Pulse Award 2017.

In 2019 Urielle became part of the Old Vic 12 where she developed BLACK POWER DESK, a new UK Black British musical with an original score of rap, reggae, soul and R&B that shines a light on a rarely explored part of Black British history. Other credits include January 22nd (BBC2/HBO), Swipe (The Arcola with NYT) and Three Sisters (East 15).

Shane O’Reilly is currently working with China Plate to develop Swansong.

Shane is a playwright and actor living in Dublin. Recent theatre writing work includes; Gold in the Water (Project Arts Centre), Windowpane (The Abbey Theatre), The Water Boys (Equinox), Näher…closer – nearer – sooner (Liz Roche Company), FOLLOW, FARM & CARE (WillFredd Theatre).

Shane’s new hybrid play/opera Her Father’s Voice will premiere in October 2025 as part of Dublin Theatre Festival, directed by Annabelle Comyn and composed by Tom Lane.

One Tenth Human create innovative science-inspired arts events. They aim to challenge assumptions, dare to think differently and be as silly as they need to be to wrestle with a very serious world.

One Tenth Human was created by artistic director Sarah Punshon, inspired by the year she spent working at the Natural History Museum, collaborating with scientists and museum professionals to create interactive events for family visitors. Since the company’s formation in 2016, they’ve engaged more than 7,000 people in unusual activities and performances via their schools’ workshops and live events. An estimated 75,000 have heard about their work online, via social media, at a conference or in the press. They’ve engaged with more than 45 scientists and mathematicians as advisors and activity leads – who are as excited by the work as the artists, teachers and audiences:

Previous projects have included: We’re Stuck (commissioned by Shoreditch Town Hall and Z-arts and produced by China Plate), Macho? (one night Spectacular at the Wellcome Collection, spring 2017), The Astonishing Vacuum Cleaner Adventure (commissioned by Lancaster Arts and feminist arts festival Hear Me Roar) and Arthur by Daniel Bye (Scotsman Fringe First 2019 winner).

Overhear worked with China Plate and Black Heritage Walks Network to create a a new cultural walk in Handsworth exploring migrant communities who settled in the Handsworth area. The audio trail version of these local stories were told by local residents and can be found on the Overhear app.

Overhear is a mobile app that draws people away from their phones to look at and listen to the world around them. They get local poets, writers and residents to record poems and stories about local spaces. This adds a digital layer of audio to spaces to explore and discover.

They invite you to listen to your environment through the poems and stories pinned in that place. How might a story or poem change how you experience a space? See what would otherwise go unnoticed, whether you’re in a park, a housing estate or train station.

They work with festivals, parks, and other large spaces to create audio trails.

Rochi is working with China Plate on Neighbourhood Creatives.

Rochi Rampal is a Birmingham based writer and theatre deviser. She has created and performed theatre regionally, nationally & internationally. Theatre writing and script development includes work with Black Country Touring (The Corner Shop, Eat!), Birmingham Literature Festival (Reliable Witness), Birmingham Young Rep (Birmingham From Above), Women & Theatre (I’m All Right Jack). She has devised shows with Stan’s Cafe, The Play House, Upstart Theatre, Pathos Munich and Highways Athens. She co-wrote Between the Two for Sadie Newman Presents, which premiered at Birmingham Rep as part of a national theatre tour, and most recently developed the script for Black Country Touring’s production Wild, which is now touring rural networks throughout the UK.

Rochi creates work for diverse audiences and venues, and as well as theatres and village halls, her work has been performed in empty shop units, caravans, schools, through headphones to audiences on an outdoor 4th floor public library terrace. Her writing for print and digital forms include short stories for West Midlands Readers’ Network (Daily Bread) and Brum Library Zine (Sheldon); audio artworks for China Plate (Humans Not Heroes series); and short form audio dramas for She Wants a Dog’s ‘A Practical Guide to Death’ (Breathe in, Breathe Out) and Fox and Rocha/Curiosity Productions’ ‘The Night Shift’ podcast (A Jewel in the Corner, The Silence of the Woods).

She was co-director of the regional work-in-progress platform PILOT Nights, was a Visiting Lecturer at University of Wolverhampton, and now lectures in Applied Theatre, Scriptwriting and Community Theatre at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Inspector Sands are known for their irresistible mix of comedy and pathos in their forensic exploration of human behaviour. Tracking the way bigger picture social and political trends are born out in the minutiae of everyday interaction, they also have a knack for “turning anxiety into an art form” (The Guardian). Their work integrates heightened fourth wall realism with an expressionistic theatrical form, drawing strongly on visual and sound design.

Exquisitely crafted physical performances and fearless comedy have been at the heart of Inspector Sands’ work, including their mid-scale production of Wuthering Heights, a co-production with China Plate and Royal and Derngate, Northampton, in association with Oxford Playhouse, which premiered in 2023. The company have also worked on an audio adaptation of their children’s show Rock Pool, which was released in Autumn 2020.

In 2019 the company were commissioned by Riksteatern to make Sällskapsrummet, a Swedish adaptation of their show The Lounge. Other shows include: Hysteria, If That’s All There Is, A High Street Odyssey, Mass Observation and Rock Pool, which have played extensively around the UK and internationally with performances at the National Theatre, Almeida, Lyric Hammersmith, Soho Theatre, Bristol Old Vic (Mayfest), Traverse, Southbank Centre, Summerhall, London International Mime Festival, BAC, 59E59 off-Broadway, Seoul Festival, Riksteatern Sweden and British Council tours in China and Europe.

Co-directors Giulia Innocenti and Lucinka Eisler regularly work with associate artists Ben Lewis (founding member), Lu Kemp and Elena Peña.

Tim Sutton is currently working with China Plate to develop To The Streets!.

He has worked extensively with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Young Vic and other major theatre companies. Recent work includes Daddy (Almeida); The Cherry Orchard (RCSSD); The Omission of the Family Coleman (Ustinov); Pericles, As You Like It and Titus Andronicus (RSC); Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (National Theatre); and Alexei Sayle’s Imaginary Sandwich Bar (BBC Radio 4). Tim wrote Cycle Song (RPS Learning & Participation Award 2012). He is developing the musical The Chain.

Tim is also committed to the development of new musical theatre and has mentored aspiring writers on the BML workshop course since its inception in 2011.

Jane Thakoordin worked with China Plate to host conversations with local residents in Ladywood and co-create protest banners reflecting the causes they are passionate about.

Jane is a participatory artist which means the work she creates is always in collaboration with others. She is a great fan of the bright, bold and beautiful, and her practice is rooted in her Guyanese heritage, as she celebrates colour and texture in the work that she produces with others. She use textiles, found objects, upcycled “stuff” often donated by people who know her penchant for the eclectic and colourful. She is driven by the process of research, planning, creation, problem solving and evaluating – always in partnership with the group or organisation that she is working with.

Jane encourages creative risk taking, trying things out, group feedback and action in her relationships with those she works with. (In Social Work that reflection is called “in-action” and it is a great way of involving everyone in the process.) She finds this is most effective when the project requires an exhibition, product, or body of work as an outcome.

She started off as an artist and then became a mental health social worker. As well as managing an established participatory arts practice, she is the manager of an innovative mental health service for students at a Birmingham based university.

China Plate are currently exploring / working on a new show with Chris Thorpe, having recently worked together to tour Talking About The Fire in 2025; both in the UK and internationally.

China Plate is supporting Steph through the ongoing development of Black Power Desk, a new UK Black British musical with an original score of rap, reggae, soul and R&B, as it builds to premiere in Autumn 2025.

Steph J Weller is an Old Vic 12 trained and Stage One supported theatre and festival producer, based in Reading. Steph is founder of PlayWell Productions CIC, working to elevate visibility and give equality of opportunity and voice to artists and their stories. These stories include (but are not limited to) the voices of: the queer lived experience; women and those who identify as non-binary; those who identify as disabled; and the lived experience of people of the global majority.

Commissions and credits include the plays Live To Tell: (a Proposal for) The Madonna Musical, Clown Sex, and I Ain’t Dumb, and musicals Black Power Desk, Lesbian Pirates! and With Courage. Steph also produces the award-winning Reading Fringe Festival and the Fizzy Sherbet Podcast promoting work by women playwrights. She is in-house producer for Reading Rep.

Roy Williams is currently working with China Plate to develop To The Streets!.

He is one of the country’s leading dramatists. In 2001 he was awarded the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright. He received an OBE in the 2008 Birthday Honours List. His plays include The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (Pilot Theatre/UK tour); Sucker Punch (Royal Court – Olivier Award nomination for Best Play); Days of Significance (RSC); Fallout, Clubland, Lift Off, (Royal Court); Sing Yer Heart Out For the Lads (National Theatre); Kingston 14 (Theatre Royal, Stratford East); Antigone (Pilot Theatre/UK tour); Soul: The Untold Story of Marvin Gaye (Royal & Derngate/Hackney Empire); The Firm (Hampstead Theatre).

Nilupa Yasmin curated the first “On Our Way” bus stop galleries. She worked with China Plate and residents in Ladywood to transform bus stops along the iconic 74 bus route into mini public art galleries. She is now working with China Plate on Neighbourhood Creatives.

Nilupa Yasmin is a multidisciplinary artist and educator working across photography, textiles, and sculpture. Her practice explores memory, materiality, and intergenerational storytelling, often centring women of colour and the transmission of knowledge through domestic and inherited crafts.

Through weaving, embroidery, and image-making, she investigates how photographs can become tactile vessels of care, identity, and remembrance. Drawing on her British Bangladeshi heritage, Yasmin reflects on culture, gender, and anthropology. An element of her practice focuses on socially engaged photography, she works collaboratively with various communities to produce and curate works of Art.

Her lens-based practice expands the materiality of photography, merging art and craft through sustainable and experimental methods. Yasmin’s work is held in permanent collections including the Government Art Collection, The New Art Gallery Walsall, and Birmingham Museums Collection, and she has exhibited internationally at Las Photo Festival (California), the Indian Institute of Technology (Hyderabad), and Pingyao Photo Festival (China). She is Lecturer in Photography at Coventry University and a studio holder at Grand Union, Birmingham.
